Navigating the Complex Mental Health System: a Brief Roadmap to Finding the “Right” Resource

Understanding the mental health system in Virginia can be difficult. There are many parts of the system, including different types of providers, specific diagnoses, insurance issues, and funding sources that may be available for people who need mental health supports. Join us as we talk about the differences and similarities in the different types of mental health specialists, including things to know that can help you choose the specialist that best meets the needs of you or your family member. We will also look at the various types and levels of care available in the community or in an in-patient setting and how to most easily access community-based services and resources.

Heather Fritz is the Community Outreach & Compliance Coordinator for EMS Ventures, the parent company of MySpectrum Counseling & Coaching and EMS of Virginia. She holds a Master’s in Social Work from the University of South Carolina and has spent most of the past 20 years working within or ancillary to the mental health, substance abuse, or juvenile justice systems in 4 different states. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, true crime podcasts, and spending time with her family outside.
