What do we Mean by Transition?

Transition happens when we move from one stage of life to another. We have all kinds of transitions in our lives, every day, and every year. Our children do too. Students transition from preschool to elementary school to middle school, from middle to high school, and at some point, they transition from high school into adulthood. That transition requires a plan. The transition your child will make from being a child to being an adult member of the community is an important journey and planningis a really important part of that journey.

If your child receives special education and related services under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), they are required to have a transition plan as part of their IEP.

DID YOU KNOW?

Under IDEA, transition planning for students with an IEP must start at age 16. However, the Virginia Regulations Governing Special Education in Virginia require that IEP transition planning in the Commonwealth begin no later than age 14.
